A while ago I read the title of an article that prompted me to do a double take. It read: “Yes, you can now take your Porsche 917 into a Porsche dealer“. Again, the people at Porsche have done the unthinkable, in a positive way.
As the manufacturer with arguably the longest list of world-beating machines that are still in good enough condition to race with, Porsche recently announced its full support for the restoration, repair, maintenance, storage, and technical set up of its old race cars. Of course, this requires working with reputable shops around the world along with digging in its own historical materials in order to ensure each car is done so with the highest degree of care.
The are several reasons for this unconventional move but for me, the most important one is the opportunity to train a new generation of staff so that its historic racing machines may be enjoyed – and maintained correctly – for years to come.
